How to make Turkish coffee

The best way of ignoring the pressure of the first post of a new blog is; typing something about it at the first sentence. So, here we are.

A very quick information about me. Living in the USA for a year and half. Came here from Turkey by following my love for a perfect woman. Now have a two year old and a kitchen full of surprises (not really). So, I will try to share my experience of cooking or messing it up, with you, as beautifully as I can.

Today I would like to show you ‘How to make Turkish coffee’. There are a few hints to make a nice Turkish coffee with full of bubbles at top. I will mention them step by step. Please be aware, you will need a coffeepot for Turkish coffee, and small coffee cups before you start to cook.

Ingredients (for serving two)

Cold water (3 coffee cup that you will use to drink afterwards)

Turkish coffee (4 teaspoon of coffee)

Sugar (optional) (3 teaspoon for a medium-sweet-coffee)

Cooking Directions

To measure the amount of water and Turkish coffee to use, you should decide how much coffee you will serve. For example, if you would like to serve 4 cups of coffee (by the way you should use small coffee cups for a better result, also that is pretty strong coffee) you should use 5 cups of coffee of water. As I cooked for only me and my wife, I used 3 coffee cups of cold water. Please use the coffee cups that you will drink your coffee afterwards and please choose small cups if possible (small as sake cups). Please set your coffee cups ready before you cook, you will need them ready to serve your coffee quickly and also with nice bubbles on top.

  • Put 3 coffee cups of cold water to coffeepot.
  • Add 4 tsp. Turkish coffee to coffeepot. If you want a sweetened coffee add sugar (for mid-sweet add 1 tsp for each coffee cup of water you used, add more or less for bitter or sweet taste). For this recipe, 3 tsp. for a mid-sweet coffee.
  • Do not stir the mixture yet.
  • Put the coffeepot on smallest burner of your stove top. Start to cook it on lowest heat.
  • When coffee starts to boil (you will understand that by the bubbles coming to top and coffee starts to rise up in the coffee pot), stir the coffee gently 2-3 times.
  • At first boil, take the coffeepot off from the burner and spoon up the bubbles at top, by a small spoon.
  • Put the bubbles equally to each coffee cups that you set before.
  • Put the coffeepot back on the burner again and bring it to boil (you can use medium high to make it faster).
  • When it boils pour coffee on the coffee cups that you put your bubbles before and serve it quickly (as bubbles can go down).

You can serve your coffee with a few pieces of Turkish delight as I did (please see the picture) or you can use chocolate covered almonds (even just chocolate). Afiyet olsun!
